GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - It was a beautiful and cool (for late August, anyway) Labor Day weekend for Stuhr Museum's annual "Back to School in Railroad Town" event, which saw hundreds of children and their families participating in authentic 1890s school-time activities.
Inside the one-room school house nestled next to the Railroad Town Hall, children drew pictures to adorn the walls, filled out placement exams and learned what a student's life was like in the 1890s (for example, DO NOT ring the bell unless instructed). They also got a fine glimpse of how studies differed from today and received certificates of merit for their efforts.
Outside the school, a steady stream of folks played hoop and sticks, tried to walk on stilts and took in other Railroad Town activities. The teachers for the weekend said they were very pleased to see so many having a good time while staying respectful of student activities.
The outdoor Living History portion of Stuhr's activities continue through September 30 when the museum moves to winter hours. For more information on hours, call (308) 385-5316.
