2008 Summer School at Stuhr Museum

Each summer, the Stuhr Museum Education Department offers classes for students of all ages, from preschoolers through adults. Class size is limited and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration for Stuhr Museum members runs from March 1st - 29th. Registrations will then be open to the general public on March 30th.

A Doll A Day
Grades:  Completed 2nd - 3rd

Description: Since time began one of the most common toys has been dolls. Each day the students will create a "pocket doll." There will be a papoose with cradle board, dolls made of corn husks, handkerchiefs, yarn and paper, china dolls and prairie dolls. By weeks end there will be 6 new tiny dolls for each participant to take home and love.

Students will experience the life of two characters from the American Girls series. They will study Kirsten, who has come with her family from Sweden to become a pioneer, and Addy and her mother, as they escape to freedom in the North after their family is torn apart by slavery. Students will cook food (buttermilk biscuits baked in a wood burning stove and hand-churned ice cream), make crafts (yarn dolls, bead necklaces) and play games inspired by the 1850’s to 1860’s time periods. 

Anne of Green Gables
Grades: Completed 4th - 6th

Description: Students will learn about the Victorian Era as they enjoy this class based on the Anne of Green Gables story. Special emphasis will be placed on fashion and lifestyle. Fudge and cobbler will be cooked on a wood burning stove. Trips will be taken to various locations, such as the Millinery and the Arboretum to pick fresh flowers to decorate straw bonnets. They will hold a Victorian tea party, exchange valentine candy, create crafts such as bookmarks and experience many other adventures based on this much loved series.

Architectural Drawing in Time
Grades: Completed 5th through Adult

Description: Using Stuhr's amazing structures as subject matter, students will learn the techniques of principles and elements of design. They will begin to understand one and two point perspective as they create their own personal drawings of buildings found throughout Railroad Town. A personal sketch pad and all mediums will be provided.

Art and Science of Batik
Grades: Completed 4th through Adult

Description: In this class, students will explore the Art of Batik - the ancient art of dyed cloth. They will also be learning the science behind extracting natural pigments from fruits, vegetables, coffee and tea. All of this will be accomplished using a wood burning stove. The finished framed project will be taken home.

Art of Pie Baking (3 Hours)
Grades: Completed 5th through Adult

Description: Do you love pie? This class is for you! The students will make a variety of pies from all-American apple to berry, custard, pumpkin and pecan. At least 10 different pies will be baked and eaten. Single, double and lattice crusts will be created and egg whites will even be whipped for meringue. This will be a week of taste bud tempting, palate pleasing, pie baking. Adults are welcome, too!

Barn Yard Drawings

Description:Meeting in the inspiring 1890s barn loft, students will study sketching technique. Classic horse drawings will be viewed as emphasis will be placed on the horse as subject matter. The entire barn yard will be experienced from the creative artist perspective as students create their own works. All supplies will be provided. This experience is for those who love to draw or have always wanted to try.

Basic Crocheting
Grades:  Completed 3rd through Adult

Description: Students will learn basic crocheting and complete several small projects such as a bookworm, a cotton dishcloth, a coaster, an ear warmer and, time allowing, a beanie. They will learn about various types of yarn, hooks and how to follow simple patterns. They will discover the history of crochet and see many examples of handmade items. Crochet hooks and yarn will be provided.

Beginning Horse for Older Riders (2 1/2 Hours)

Description: This class is uniquely designed as a combination of cowpokes and Horse 1, for older students who want to learn about horses and how to ride. Hard soled shoes, blue jeans and helmets such as bike helmets are mandatory.

Blacksmithing
Grades:  Completed 5th and Up

Location: Siebler Blacksmith Shop
Description: Students will learn basic blacksmithing skills, shop safety, how to build and maintain a coal fire, as well as hammer control and techniques. They will make a different project each day. Due to the nature of the class, long sleeve shirts, jeans and boots are required. For safety purposes, children wearing shorts or nylon pants will not be allowed to participate. Leather gloves are recommended and safety glasses will be provided.

Bugs, Birds & All Things Wild

Description: Students will spend the week exploring the grounds for bugs, birds and other creatures that co-exist at Stuhr. They will create animal masks, critter logs, toad houses and pine cone bird feeders. Students will discover there is no place like Stuhr for enjoying ducks, geese, fish, turtles and even a buffalo. Play clothes should be worn, because in order to get close to nature one usually gets messy. Disposable cameras will be provided (it will be the responsibility of the family to develop the film).

Choo Choo Preschool

Description: Students will enjoy all things railroad as they meet in an actual 1880s caboose and hear stories, make crafts and play games all based on trains. What more stimulating environment for young minds than meeting daily in one of the favorite themes found in children's literature? Special explorations will be made in the depot and other locations in Railroad Town, and snacks will be provided.

Computerized Photo Editing (3 hrs, 4 days)

Description: This class is designed for young photographers who have basic knowledge of digital camera use and would like to further broaden their artistic capabilities though the use of digital photography editing software. Students will have the opportunity to photograph Stuhr's incredible landscapes and prairie pioneer life and take these images to the digital darkroom. Students will learn how to properly crop, use color techniques, white balance correct, exposure correction and more through the use of photo editing software and will take home their own matted 5X7 print displaying the techniques learned in class. Students will need to bring their own digital camera. It is not required but they may bring their own laptop for extra individual time working with their software.

Cowpokes (2 1/2 Hours)

Description: Students will discover first-hand about the cowboy: His life, dress and work. They will learn how to use a throw rope, care for and saddle a horse, ride horseback, use a branding iron and more. Hard soled shoes, blue jeans and helmets are mandatory.

Digital Photography
Grades:  Completed 4th through Adult

Description: Students will learn the basics of photography through the digital camera. They must bring their own digital cameras and printer attachment cords. They will learn composition, light, balance and subject selection. Students will print some photos in class. The end result will be student generated pictures for personal use.

Embroidery for Beginners
Grades:  Completed 5th and Up
Date: July 14 - 18, 1-3 p.m.

Description: Students will learn the beautiful art of embroidery. Nearly a dozen different stitching types will be learned as they experience various patterns, mediums, needles and the use of the thimble. An understanding of the importance of embroidery to women in the 1800s will be gained as they embroider a doily, a sachet bag and even their own blue jeans. All crafting supplies will be provided. Students will be required to bring a pair of their own jeans and shorts on which to embroider.

Experience the Prairie
Grades:  Completed Kindergarten Through 1st Grade

Description: Students will, over a five-day period, experience many adventures on the prairie. They will wash clothes on a washboard, press wild flowers, and learn prairie games and songs. They will read stories about covered wagons, load a handcart and travel across the prairie. They will create a picture journal and snacks will be provided.

Gold Rush Trail
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up

Description: Students will study the California Trail as it passed through Nebraska and view first hand Stuhr Museum's location in this reference. They will study the history of the Goldrush '49ers. They will even find, stake a claim and pan for gold as if they were in the very fields. Those who strike the motherload will keep their fortune.

Horse 1 (2 1/2 Hours)

Description: This class is designed to give the students an introduction to the horse. Students will learn basic handling skills on the ground including grooming, saddling and bridling. Horse 2 (2 1/2 Hours)

Description: This class will expand upon the subject matter of Horse 1. Students will spend more time handling and riding the horse. They will learn the more in-depth care a horse requires and basic equine terminology. Hard soled shoes, blue jeans and helmets are mandatory.

Jams and Jellies (3 Hours)

Description: Students will enjoy the time honored fun of jam and jelly making as they tour Stuhr's gardens, harvest fruit, design their own labels and produce their products. They will learn the difference between jams and jellies as they prepare and sample a number of kinds. By the end of the week they will have prepared several personal jars to take home and refrigerate, for their families to enjoy.

Kaya

Location: Arboretum Across from the Earth Lodge
Description: This class is based on the American Girl Series. Kaya, a Nez Perce Indian girl, has adventures in what would become the Northwestern United States. Students will learn to erect a tipi and play games inspired by the Nez Perce Indians. They will create bead necklaces, moccasins, feed sack dresses and corn cob dolls.

Kid's Corner Preschool

Description: Meeting at the Kid's Corner in the Stuhr Building each day, emphasis will be placed on reading, as the 1800s are explored. Clothing will be experienced through dress-up and wash tub play. Log Cabin life will be seen through rope beds, the toy wood burning stove and water pump. A wild game hunt will take place as Stuhr's ducks and geese are fed. It will be a week of games, crafts and activities. Snacks will be provided.

Kid's Corner Summer School

Description: Early Elementary students will meet at the Kid's Corner in the Stuhr Building. After studying the people will make up a prairie town by discussing their hats, the class will walk to Railroad town and explore the homes and business where the unique hats would have been worn. Students will receive a photo of themselves wearing hats. Covered wagons and the trails and even the one room school will be experienced through games and crafts. There will be plenty of time to play in the fun filled Kid's Corner. Snacks will be provided.

Knitting For Beginners
Grades: Completed 5th and Up
Date: July 14 - 18, 9-11 a.m.

Description: Students will learn the basic stitches of knit, purl, cast on the cast off as instruction in different types of yarn, needles and pattern reading is given. Projects, such as bracelets, scarves, a purse and even a vest for their favorite Teddy Bear will be made. We will supply each student with a set of needles, yarn and patterns. Students should bring a basket on Monday in which to store their supplies and their Teddy Bear on Wednesday.

Laura Ingalls Wilder 1

Description: Students will discover what life on the prairie would have been like as they read the Laura Ingalls Wilder series focusing on the books "On the Banks of the Plum Creek" and "Little Town on the Prairie." They will make a straw mattress, sew a "nine-patch" quilt, cook on a wood burning stove and experience the life of the Ingalls sister. Period dress is encouraged but not required.

Leather Working (3 Hours)

Description: Students will learn the art of advanced leather working as they cut, tool and dye personalized leather items. An emphasis will be placed on personal creativity as students design and produce leather belts and wrist bands for their keeping.

Living History Apprentice Training (5 hrs, 4 days)

Description: Have you thought what it would be like to live as a young person over 100 years ago? Become a part of this unique experience that involves you in many aspects of living and working in different time periods: the 1840s Pawnee Earth Lodge, the 1860s Road Ranche (Menck Cabin), the 1890s Railroad Town, and the current time of museum life. Participants will spend 4 in-depth days learning period-appropriate manners, chores, games, crafts and meal preparation. This class will prepare you to assist in interpretive and educational programs at Stuhr Museum throughout the year. At the end of this learning experience, if you are interested in becoming an LHA, an application will need to be submitted.

Log Cabin Adventure

Description: Students will learn of the first pioneers of Nebraska - how they traveled and survived as they built their homes. They will make covered wagons, miniature log cabins and plant seeds while they explore life in the log cabin settlement. They will learn games and toys from a time when children created their own fun. They will churn butter, sample dried foods and enjoy traditional snacks.

Macrame
Grades:  Completed 4th Through Adult

Description: Students learn the history of macrame and the use of rope in art as they create projects out of jute. The week will begin with the making of a seven strand rope using period equipment. Throughout the week they will create and take home place mats, plant hangers, hot pads and more. These will be individualized by working knots, beads and natural materials into their design.

Mama's Rag Basket
Grades: Completed 2nd Through Adult

Description: Boys and girls alike will enjoy creating animals, dolls and projects of their choosing from hand torn strips of muslin and calico. Students will study the artist Winslow Homer from the 1880s. They will discover that toys were often created from supplies found in the home. The creations they design will be theirs to keep.

Mixing Bowls and Wooden Spoons (3 Hours)

Description: Students will experience the wonderful aromas and tantalizing flavors of fresh baked bread, cream puffs with homemade filling, dumplings simmering in broth and even a cake using great-grandma's recipe. These and other flour based recipes derived from batters and doughs will be prepared and cooked on an actual wood burning stove.

Moccasin Making
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up

Description: Students will learn the art of leather working. They will learn the history of leather crafting firsthand as they experience cutting, stitching and decorating their own moccasins which they will keep.

Music on the Prairie

Description: Students will experience many much-loved children's songs from this time period. They will create several rhythm instruments to be used in their Prairie band and celebrate their music in simple square dancing. The week will be completed with a brief program presented to parents and friends in the Railroad Town Gazebo. Snacks will be provided.

Native Storyboarding
Grades:  Completed 3rd and Up

Description: Students will make a branch-framed raw hide storyboard. In the Earth Lodge's inspired environment, they will learn how and why storyboards were used in the native culture as they produce their own leather pictorial story using dyes made from all natural sources.

Nebraska Outlaws: Fact & Fiction
Grades:  Completed 3rd through 5th
Date: June 9 - 13, 1-3 p.m.: June 23 - 27, 9-11 a.m.

Location: 1890 Barn Loft
Description: Through the use of power points and recorded history, students will be exposed to information about outlaws that have been made bigger than life. Such individuals as Sam Bass, Wild Bill Hickok, Jessie James, the Hardins and the Daltons and their adventures in Nebraska will be studied. Gangs will be organized and the week will be spent planning and committing robberies in Railroad Town. Will it be the Bank or the Trains or even the Depot? Should justice prevail? If so, an inside study of the Marshal's jail may even take place. This experience is not for the faint-hearted.

Pawnee Families

Description: Students will meet in a full sized tipi and throughout the week see life through the eyes of a Pawnee child. They will discover the homey environment of the Earth Lodge as they view the buffalo beds, cooking methods, animal skin clothing and appreciate how every part of the buffalo was essential for survival. Students will make and use their own "possibles" bag. Games will be played, crafts will be made and appropriate foods sampled.

Penny Doll

Description: Students will discover that one hundred years ago, children learned basic sewing skills by making clothes for a Penny Doll. They will practice basic sewing as they make take home projects centering around their own Penny Doll with complete wardrobe. This subject matter will be of benefit to beginning 4-H participants.

Pony Express & Beyond

Description: Students will learn the fascinating history of Nebraska's early mail delivery. The time reference will begin with the Pony Express and end with early train delivery. Crafts will include handmade quill pens and natural inks. On Friday, a mock station is station delivery will take place.

Description: Spend a week exploring how Nebraska children filled their play time. Students will discover old fashion fun as they learn to play checkers, marbles, pick-up sticks, jump rope and many more time honored games. String games, buzz saws and puppets will be made as simple household items are used to create joy. Books will be read, snacks created and eaten, memories will be made and no batteries will be necessary.

Prairie Preschool

Description: Students will explore new frontiers in an old-fashioned way. They will experience a connection to history through daily activities, such as exploring Railroad Town and the barnyard. Children will be able to imagine life as a pioneer through reading stories and taking part in discussions. They will enjoy firsthand the lifestyle of the prairie by participating in old-fashioned games, handcrafts and snacks. Stuhr's unique setting will stimulate the adventurous spirit with a fun approach to learning.

Description: All aboard! Come join the passengers as you meet in the Bosselman Family, Hoch Family, Union Pacific Boarding Car. Students will make their own engineer hats and more, as they learn of trains through storybooks, games and activities. Train travel will come to life as students explore the steam locomotive, the coal car, the dining car, the caboose and the depot. Snacks will be provided.

Quilting For Beginners

Description: Students will learn the basic skills of beginning quilting. A project will be created as they learn to piece strips and hand sew a design using large hand quilting stitches. Upon completion of the quilted sampler the students can take them home and make a pillow, doll quilt or even a wall hanging of their project. Inspiration will be gained from viewing vintage quilts.

Railroad Comes to the Prairie
Grades:  Completed 3rd and Up

Location: Railroad Town Depot
Description: The students will discover the history of building of the railroad through Nebraska and see its impact on our state's development. Manual communication techniques will be experienced as various train cars and the depot will be explored. They will learn to switch genuine tracks and experience communication first hand as a telegraph system is built and Stuhr's own system is experienced. They will discover old fashion fun as they assemble an electric train set and then take an abundance of railroad handcart rides.

Rug Making
Grades:  Completed 4th through Adult

Location: Cleary Farmhouse
Description: Students will discover Great Grandma's wisdom in recycling, as a variety of fabrics and natural materials are used to fashion their own personal project. They will learn to braid, wrap and coil a rug for their keeping. Should students have color preferences they are encouraged to bring fabrics of their choice, otherwise all materials will be provided.

Samantha (3 Hours)
Grades:  Completed 3rd through 5th

Description: This class is based on the American Girl Book Series. Samantha is an orphan being raised by her wealthy Grandmother in the early 1900s. Students will experience proper etiquette as they prepare and serve foods from the Victorian ear including hand churned ice cream, sugar cookies and strawberry biscuits. They will create a number of Victorian crafts such as trinket boxes, hair bows, cross-stitch works and calling cards as they share Samantha's story. Period dress is encouraged but not required.

Special Days on the Prairie 1

Location: 1890s Barn Loft
Description: Students will learn what and how people on the prairie celebrated as they experience first-hand a variety of holidays and special days while enjoying kaleidoscopes, buzz saws and more. They will even be a very special celebration in the loft as they hold a barn dance. Snacks provided.

Stuhr's Secret Fairy Garden
Grades:  Completed 2nd or 3rd

Description: What lies hidden in Stuhr's beautiful gardens? Could Stuhr be the secret home for "Flower Fairies?" Our Fairy Godmother will lead students to a secret enchanted garden, where they will learn the language of flowers and trees and the folk lore of Garden Fairies. This will be a week of crafts and activities that will lead to Friday's tea when our participating fairies will invite their best friends to join.

Tinsmithing 1
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up

Location: Platte Valley Tinshop
Description: Students will learn about the origin, tools and products of the forgotten trade of Tinsmithing. By using the tools of the trade, students will create several authentic items that might have been found for sale in a tinsmith's wagon. Students will get to take home the items they've made.

Description: Students will apply the skills learned in Tinsmithing 1. They will increase their talent in this lost art as they create more difficult projects, such as cups, boxes, funnels and perhaps even a lunch pail. Students will get to take home the items they make.

Tipi Preschool

Description: Students imaginations will run free as they meet in an actual tipi. All stories shared and read, games played and crafts made will be influenced by Nebraska's Native American culture. The treasures of Stuhr's Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda will be used to bring history to life. Special treats will be provided each day.

Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain and Friends
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up
Date: June 2 - 6, 9-11 a.m.
Instructor: Terry Desch

Location: Rural School
Description: The students will be involved with hands on experience drawn from Twain's "Tom Sawyer." Related crafts will be made and taken each day. Bring a large button shirt for painting on Monday. Hats and period clothing are encouraged but not required. Come participate in Twain's tale children have loved for years.

Vaudeville on the Prairie (3 Hours)
Grades:  Completed 3rd and up
Date: June 16 - 20, 9 a.m.-Noon
Instructor: Ellen Bartlett

Location: Railroad Depot
Description: Students who love to perform will be given the opportunity to study under the direction of one of Grand Island's award-winning dramatic artists. The week will be spent experiencing poetry, prose, comedic vignette and other dramatic pieces from the 1890s. Nebraska authors such as Willa Cather will be part of the mix. On the last day of class, students will perform for family, friends and Stuhr members as the museum's own "Vaudeville on the Prairie" is performed from the Depot platform.

Victorian Crafting & Etiquette
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up
Date: June 23 - 27, 1-3 p.m.
Instructor: Trisha Hostetler

Location: Cleary Farmhouse
Description: Students will spend the week creating Victorian treasures such as band boxes and calling cards, which will be written with nib pens. Social communication in the Victorian era will be studied through the medium of flowers, fans and more. Etiquette will be studied and practiced as the week will end with a Victorian Lawn Party.

Watercolor Painting (3 Hours, 4 Days)
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up
Date: June 23 - 26, 9 a.m.-Noon
Instructor: Dee Spencer Rodgers
Tuition: $45
Location: Stuhr Building - Cronin Hall
Description: Students will study art appreciation and history as they participate in this class. They will review watercolor technique and sketching as they create images taken from Stuhr's rich environment.

Week on the Farm
Grades:  Completed Kindergarten through 2nd
Date: July 14 - 18, 9-11 a.m. & 1-3 p.m.
Instructor: Nancy Buettner

Location: 1890s Barn
Description: Students will experience first hand how different life was for farm families in the 1800s. Live animals will be cared for as sheep and goats are fed, watered and their stalls are "mucked." Crops are studied as the soil in the 1890s garden is prepared, seeds are planted and water is carried by the bucket brigade. The harvest is brought in and corn will be husked during the husking bee. So put on your overalls and grab your pitchfork, because we've got chores to do!

Woman's Life in the 1880s
Grades:  Completed 5th and Up
Date: June 23 - 27, 9-11 a.m.
Instructor: Nancy Buettner

Location: Hired Man's House
Description: Students will discover the proper days for laundry, baking, mending and more as they experience a variety of home making tasks, discuss fashion trends and etiquette and learn what traditional life was like for a woman in the 1800s. They will wash clothes, bake, churn butter, sew and discover why they say "a woman's work is never done."

Wood Working 1 (3 Hours)
Grades:  Completed 4th and Up
Date: June 9 - 13, 9 a.m.-Noon
Instructor: Bob Dudley

Location: Wood Plaining Mill
Description: Students will learn basic use of vintage hand tools such as the hammer, hand saw, rasp, hand plane, brace and auger bit. Rich examples of period woodwork will be viewed throughout Railroad Town. The major project of the week will be an individually designed bird house, which time allowing, will be painted on Friday. There will be a strong emphasis on safety. Provided goggles must be worn and open toed shoes will not be allowed.

Wood Working 2 (3 Hours)
Grades:  Completed Wood Working 1
Date: June 23 - 27, 9 a.m.-Noon
Instructor: Bob Dudley
Tuition: $55
Location: Wood Plaining Mill
Description: This class will begin with a review of wood working basics and safety. A section of teaching will deal with modern equipment and wood types. Students will study proper technique in drilling, counter sinking, clamping and gluing as they design and build their own personal carpenter's tool box. Students must have taken Wood Working 1 or a former Stuhr Woodworking Class. Provided goggles must be worn and open toed shoes will not be allowed.
