2010 Summer School at Stuhr Museum
Each summer, the Stuhr Museum Education Department offers classes for students of all ages, from preschoolers through adults. Class size is limited and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration for Stuhr Museum members runs from March 2nd - 29th. Registrations will then be open to the general public on March 30th.

A Doll A Day
Ages: 7 Years and up

Description: Since time began one of the most common toys has been dolls. Each day the students will create a "pocket doll." There will be a papoose with cradle board, dolls made of corn husks, handkerchiefs, yarn and paper, china dolls and prairie dolls. By weeks end there will be 6 new tiny dolls for each participant to take home and love.

Description: Students will experience the life of two characters from the American Girl Series. They will study Kirsten, who has come with her family from Sweden to America. They will also explore the lives of Addy and her mother, who as slaves escaped to freedom in the North. Students will bake buttermilk biscuits in a wood burning stove, and churn ice cream by hand. They will make yarn dolls, bead necklaces, dip candles and play games inspired by the 1850s and 1860s.
Age Old Handmade Science
Ages: 9 years old and up

Location: Woodshop in the 1890s Farmstead
Description: Learn firsthand that science has been around long before electricity or batteries. Students will discover how to measure distance, tree height and more. Using simple items, they will create their own personal compass and a pocket sundial. They will even participate in a mock archaeological dig. The greatest discovery of all may be that science can actually be fun!
Anne of Green Gables
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: Students will learn about the Victorian Era as they enjoy this class based on the Anne of Green Gables story. Special emphasis will be placed on fashion and lifestyle. Trips will be taken to various locations, such as the Millinery in Railroad Town. They will hold a Victorian tea party, exchange valentine candy, create crafts and experience many other adventures based on this much loved series.
Arbor Art
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: Discover the beauty of Stuhr's Hornady Family Arbor as art projects are created from materials such as trees, flowers, grasses and more. Learn to create keepsakes from the wealth of nature's richness that can be found throughout Stuhr's grounds. Students should bring an oversized shirt for clothing protection.
Art of Pie Baking (3 hours)

Description: Do you love pie? This class is for you! Students will make a variety of pies from all-American apple to berry, custard, pumpkin and pecan. At least 10 different pies will be baked and eaten. Single, double and lattice crusts will be created and egg whites will even be whipped for meringue. This will be a week of taste bud tempting, palate pleasing, pie baking. Adults are welcome too!
Barnyard Preschool
Ages: 4 & 5 years old

Description: Discover how much fun helping Grandma with her chores can actually be. Pump water from the well. Scrub clothes and dry them on the line. Meet our chickens as eggs are gathered, cracked open and the shells are used to create art. Plant seeds in the garden. Explore the barn and learn songs from the farm as a hoe-down is held in the loft. Learn that from dawn to dusk there is always something to do on the farm.
Basic Crocheting
Ages: 10 years old to adult

Description: Students will learn basic crocheting by learning the basic, chain, single and double crochet stitches. They will complete several projects such as a personal bracelet, scarf, a pot holder, and if time allows, other free pattern projects will be done. They will learn about various types of yarn, hooks, and how to follow simple patterns. They will discover the history of crocheting and see many examples of handmade items. Crochet hooks and yarn will be provided.
Beginning Horse for Older Riders (2 1/2 hours)

Description: This class is uniquely designed as a combination of Cowpokes and Horse 1, for older students who want to learn about horses and how to ride. These students must be at least 9 years old. Blacksmithing
Ages: 11 years old and up

Location: Siebler Blacksmith Shop
Description: Students will learn basic blacksmithing skills, shop safety, how to build and maintain a coal fire, as well as hammer control and techniques. There will be a different project each day. Due to the nature of this class, long sleeve shirts, jeans and boots are required. For safety purposes students must stand 4'6'' tall. Children wearing shorts or nylon pants will not be allowed to participate. Leather gloves are recommended and safety glasses will be provided.

Description: Students will spend the week exploring the grounds for bugs, birds and other creatures that co-exist at Stuhr. Special focus will be placed on the Hornady Family Arbor wetlands. Students will discover there is no place like Stuhr for enjoying insects, ducks, geese, fish, turtles or even an occasional buffalo as they draw and journal their discoveries. Play clothes should be worn, because in order to get close to nature one usually gets messy.
Candle Creations Old & New
Ages: 10 years old to adult

Description: Discover many of the artistic and creative ways that candles can be made. Hand-dipped, multi layer, cracked ice, sand candles and more will be created. Students will discover the fun they can have as they make and keep a variety of candles during the week. Older clothes should be worn as wax can be difficult to remove from fabrics.
Chicken Coop Creations
Ages: 8 - 10 years old

Description: Throughout the week, eggs will be gathered from our working chicken coop. A multitude of crafts will be made. Eggs will be painted, mosaics will be designed and hand held egg critters will be born. By the end of the week a carton full of creativity will be taken home.

Digital Photography
Ages: 9 years old to adult

Description: Students will learn the basics of photography through the digital camera. They must bring their own digital cameras and printer attachment cords. They will learn composition, light, balance and subject selection. Students will print some photos in class. The end result will be student generated pictures for personal use.
Discovering Stuhr Museum

Description: This class is designed for early elementary students who would like to explore all the amazing places throughout Stuhr Museum where they can safely have fun. Stories will be read, crafts made and games played as the Pawnee Earth lodge, Log Cabin Complex, Hornady Family Arbor, Railroad Town, Stuhr Building and Train System are all explored.
Earth Lodge Adventures

Description: Students will meet in Stuhr's own Earth Lodge where they will explore the life of the Nebraska Pawnee people. A hard day's work will include actual gardening with bone tools, as well as, preparing for the big buffalo hunt. Each child will make and use their own "possibles bag" along with other crafts. There will be games and celebrations and trips to visit our buffalo friend Sampson and his goat pal Clyde.
Fishing Fun-damentals

Description: Few hobbies learned at Stuhr will provide more fun, nor last longer than fishing. No place in Hall County provides waters more filled for successful opportunity to practice skills being taught. Species of NE fish will be studied to learn the best places to catch them, whether it be a pond, lake or stream, and even the effect of weather on a successful catch. Kids will fall for this class hook, line and sinker!
Glass Etching
Ages: 8 years old to adult

Description: Students young and old will discover the amazing creativity involved in the glass etching process. Throughout the week they will view examples of etching found on mirrors, window panes and even vases and jars. They will develop patterns and learn techniques in design as they create their own personal works of art. Sand blasting technique will be demonstrated. A couple of projects will be made and a framed mirrored design will be completed and taken home.
Gold Rush Trail
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: Students will study the California Trail as it passed through Nebraska and view firsthand Stuhr Museum's location in this reference. They will study the history of the Goldrush '49ers. They will even find, stake a claim and pan for gold as if they were in the very fields. Those who strike the mother lode will keep their fortune.
Grandma, Me and Tea
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: For those who love all things Victorian, this class provides an opportunity for students to entertain one of their favorite persons in grand style. Monday through Thursday will be devoted to the preparation of an elegant tea. Linens will be pressed using period irons. Invitations, name and place cards will be created along with a demonstration using nib pens. Our fine china will be set, as well as proper etiquette taught, in its use. Floral centerpieces will be created, foods prepared and a special program rehearsed. All these preparations will come together on Friday as each student hosts a special person of their choice. Grandmas, Moms, neighbors, even an older sister will be welcomed.
Helen's Communications

Description: Students will discover the obstacles Helen Keller overcame and the methods she learned to become one of the most amazing communicators of her age. Description: Students will enjoy the time honored fun of jam and jelly making as they tour Stuhr's gardens, harvest fruit, design their own labels and hand make their products. They will learn the difference between jams and jellies, as throughout the week they bake biscuits to sample the creations they make. By the end of the week they will have prepared several personal jars to take home, refrigerate and allow their families to enjoy.
Kaya

Description: This class is based on the American Girl series. Kaya, a Nez Perce Indian girl, has adventures in what would become the Northwestern United States. Students will create crafts and play games inspired by the Nez Perce Indians. This class will take place at the Hornady Family Arbor across from the Pawnee Earth Lodge and meet around a small scale tipi which the class will erect.
Kid's Corner Preschool

Description: Meeting at the Kid's Corner in the Stuhr Building each day, emphasis will be placed on reading, as the 1800s are explored. Clothing styles will be experienced through dress-up and wash tub play. Log cabin life will be seen through rope beds, the toy wood burning stove and water pump. A wild game hunt will take place as Stuhr's ducks and geese are fed. It will be a week of games, crafts and activities.
Laura Ingalls Wilder 1

Description: Students will experience the prairie and pioneer life through the eyes of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Crafts and activities are based on the book "Little House on the Prairie" and "The Long Winter." Crafts will be sewn and foods will be made of which Laura herself would have been proud. Pioneer clothing is encouraged but not required.
Laura Ingalls Wilder 2

Description: Students will discover what life on the prairie would have been like as they read the Laura Ingalls Wilder series focusing on the books "On The Banks of the Plum Creek" and "Little Town on the Prairie." They will sew simple projects, create crafts and cook on a wood burning stove as they experience the type of prairie life that Laura would have known. Period dress is encouraged but not required.
Leather Working
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: Students will learn the art of leather working as they cut, tool and dye personalized leather items. An emphasis will be placed on personal creativity as students design and produce leather belts and wrist bands for their keeping. Should time allow, other projects will be created.
Living History Apprentice (6 hours, 4 days)
Ages: 12 years old and up

Description: Become a part of this unique, new experience that involves you in many aspects of the education and interpretive programs at the museum. Participants will spend 4 in-depth days living and working in four different time periods: The 1890's Pawnee Earth Lodge, the 1860's Road Ranche, the 1890's Railroad Town and the Turn-Of-The-Century Farm. Activities will include period-appropriate chores, crafts and meal preparation. Participants will be able to use learned skills throughout the season to assist in the Interpretation and Education programs at Stuhr Museum. Limited to 12 participants.
Log Cabin Adventure

Description: Students will learn of the first pioneers of Nebraska; how they traveled and survived as they built their homes. They will make covered wagons, miniature log cabins and plant seeds. While they explore life in the log cabin settlement they will experience firsthand pulling a handcart across the prairie. They will learn games and toys from a time when children were expected to create their own fun.
Millinery Magic
Ages: 10 years old and up

Description: Students will be given a rare opportunity to discover the life of an apprentice Milliner as they create their own Victorian hat. The week will begin with the making of a personal stitch book, proceed to the drawing and design phase and end with the creation of a personal Victorian hat. Students will visit the Mercantile to see what other accessories the "proper" Victorian young lady might have in her possession and the class will end with an informal style show on Friday.
Mixing Bowls and Wooden Spoons (2 1/2 hours)

Description: Students will experience the wonderful aromas and tantalizing flavors of fresh baked bread, cream puffs with homemade filling, dumplings simmering in broth and even a cake using great-grandma's recipe. These and other flour based recipes derived from batters and dough will be prepared and cooked on an actual wood burning stove. Students are encouraged to bring their apron and come join in the fun.
Music on the Prairie
Ages: 4 & 5 years old

Description: This class is designed to allow little first time visitors of Stuhr Museum the opportunity to explore all the amazing places in Railroad Town to have fun. They will learn of family life while exploring the homes, the businesses while touring the shops and transportation while visiting the Livery Stable and the train. Stories will be read, games played and crafts made.
My Own Afghan

Description: Students will discover a valuable life long craft as they begin a project which will provide hours of fun all summer long. Basic crochet skills will be taught as yarn squares are crocheted, joined and bordering techniques are learned. The needle and pattern will be provided but in order for the exact colors to be chosen, registered students will be mailed instructions as to the type and amount of yarn to be purchased. This yarn is to be brought on the first day of class.
Native American Beadwork
Ages: 10 years old to adult

Description: Students will study the history of Native American beading and it's importance as self-expression. They will discover this beautiful art by designing their own patterns that will then be created on the beading loom. Students will also learn the lazy stitch which can be beaded directly on leather or other fabrics. This class fittingly will take place in the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda.
Nebraska's Outlaws
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: Students will learn about outlaws that have been made bigger than life. Such people as Sam Bass, Wild Bill Hickok, Jessie James, the Hardins, and the Daltons and their adventures in Nebraska will be studied. The week will be spent planning and staging robberies in Railroad Town. Will it be the Bank, the Trains or even the Depot? Should justice prevail? If so, an inside study of the Marshal's jail will take place. This experience is not for the faint hearted.
Nebraska's Trails
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: Students will experience the life of early pioneers traveling across Nebraska, as they pull handcarts over Stuhr's swells. Parfleche

Description: Students will experience an unforgettable opportunity to study the lifestyle of the Nebraska Plains Indians in this class taught by Steven Yellowbird Ervin. They will learn about age old craftsmanship as they work with raw hide and sinew creating their own personal parfleche storage box and a native necklace.
Prairie Crafting and Games

Description: Spend a week exploring how Nebraska children filled their play time. Students will discover old fashioned fun as they learn to play checkers, marbles, pick-up sticks, jump rope and many more time honored games. String games, buzz saws and puppets will be made as simple household items are used to create joy. Books will be read, crafts will be created, memories will be made and no batteries will be necessary.
Prairie Preschool

Description: Students will explore new frontiers in an old-fashioned way. They will experience a connection to history through daily activities, such as exploring Railroad Town and the barnyard. Children will be able to imagine life as a pioneer through reading stories and enjoying firsthand the lifestyle of the prairie by participating in old-fashioned games and making handcrafts. Stuhr's unique setting will stimulate the adventurous spirit with a fun approach to learning.
Prairie Trains

Description: All aboard! Come join the passengers as you meet in the Bosselman Family, Hoch Family, Union Pacific Boarding Car. Students will make their own engineer hats and more, as they learn of trains through storybooks, games and activities. Train travel will come to life as students explore the steam locomotive, the coal car, the dining car, the caboose and the depot.
Railroad Comes to the Prairie
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: The students will discover the history of the building of the railroad through Nebraska and see its impact on our state's development. Manual communication techniques will be experienced as various train cars and the depot will be explored. They will learn to switch genuine tracks and experience communication first hand as a telegraph system is built and Stuhr's own system is experienced. They will discover old fashioned fun as they assemble an electric train set and then take an abundance of railroad handcart rides.
Samantha (3 hours, 4 days)
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: This class is based on the American Girl Book Series. Samantha is an orphan being raised by her wealthy Grandmother in the early 1900s. Students will experience proper etiquette as they prepare and serve foods from the Victorian era including hand-churned ice cream, sugar cookies and strawberry biscuits. They will create a number of Victorian crafts, such as trinket boxes, hair bows, cross-stitch and calling cards, as they share Samantha's story. Period dress is encouraged but not required.
Secret Fairy Garden
Ages: 7 - 9 years old

Description: What lies hidden in Stuhr's beautiful gardens? Could Stuhr be the secret home for "Flower Fairies?" Our Fairy Godmother will lead students to a secret enchanted garden, where they will learn the language of flowers and trees and the folk lore of Garden Fairies. This will be a week of crafts and activities that will lead to Friday's tea.
Special Days on the Prairie

Strike-A-Light
Ages: 10 years old to adult

Description: Students will never forget experiencing this rare opportunity to study the Nebraska Plains Indians under the teaching of Steven Yellowbird Ervin. They will learn about leather craft from the hoof to the finished product as they create their own personal strike-a-light leather pouch and a native necklace.
Tinsmithing
Ages: 10 years old and up

Location: Railroad Town Tinshop
Description: Students will learn about the origin, tools and products of the forgotten trade of Tinsmithing. By using the tools of the trade, students will create several authentic items that might have been found for sale in a tinsmith's wagon. Students get to take home the items they make.
Tom Sawyer and Friends
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: The students will be involved with hands on experiences drawn from Twain's "Tom Sawyer." Related crafts will be made and taken home. Bring a large button shirt for painting on Monday. Hats and period clothing are encouraged but not required. Come participate in Twain's tales children have loved for years.
Vaudeville on the Prairie
Ages: 8 years old to adult

Description: Students who love to perform will be given the opportunity to study under the direction of one of Grand Island's award winning dramatic artists. The week will be spent experiencing poetry, prose, comedic vignette and other dramatic pieces from the 1890s. Nebraska authors such as Willa Cather will be experienced. Students will perform for family, friends and Stuhr members as Stuhr's own "Vaudeville on the Prairie" is performed at the Railroad Town Depot on Friday. The public is welcomed.
Wagons Ho!
Ages: 8 years old and up

Location: Railroad Town Livery Stable
Description: Learn in-depth what transportation was like before the development of the engine. As the Stuhr grounds are explored many wagon types, such as the farm, covered wagon, buckboard, buggies, delivery and more will be discovered. The purposes of the various wagon types and the businesses that used them will be seen. Types of horses and other surprising animals used to pull them will be studied, as will the harness and methods of connection. By the end of class, students will see why the steam engine was viewed as such a wonder.
Watercolor Painting (3 hours, 4 days)
Ages: 9 years old and up
Date: August 2 - 5, 9-Noon

Location: Cronin Hall in the Stuhr Building
Description: Students will study art appreciation and history as they participate in this class. They will review watercolor technique and sketching as they create images taken from Stuhr's rich environment. They will learn elements and principal of design, composition and color relationship and will be encouraged with technique as to how to critique their own work.
Week on the Farm
Ages: Completed Kindergarten - 7 years old
Date: July 5 - 9, 9-11 am & 1-3 pm

Location: Stolley Barnyard in Railroad Town
Description: Students will experience firsthand how different life was for farm families in the 1800s. Live animals will be cared for as sheep and goats are fed, watered and their stalls are "mucked." Crops will be planted and experienced as the soil in the 1890s garden is prepared, seeds are planted and water is carried by the bucket brigade. The harvest is brought in and corn will be husked during the husking bee. A live sheep will be sheared and the wool will be prepared. So put on your overalls and grab your pitchfork, because we've got chores to do!
Woman's Life in the 1880s
Ages: 9 years old and up

Location: Cleary Farmhouse
Description: Students will discover the proper days for laundry, baking, mending and more as they experience a variety of home making tasks, discuss fashion trends and etiquette, and learn what traditional life was like for a woman in the 1880s. They will wash clothes, bake on a wood burning stove, churn butter, sew a small handmade kitchen item and discovere why they say "a woman's work is never done."
Wood Working
Ages: 9 years old and up
Date: June 21 - 25, 8:30-10:30 am & 1-3 pm

Tuition: $60 members, $65 nonmembers
Location: Woodshop in the 1890s Farmstead
Description: Students will learn basic use of vintage hand tools such as the hammer, hand saw, rasp, hand plane, brace and auger bit. Rich examples of period woodwork will be viewed. As time allows the daily projects will include a tri-square, a letter holder, a wooden jack puzzle, a climbing bear and a peg puzzle. There will be a stong emphasis on safety. Provided goggles must be worn and open toed shoes will not be allowed.
