Stuhr Museum's Harvest Festival

GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - Over 500 people enjoyed a absolutely gorgeous fall afternoon during Stuhr Museum's first ever Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 27th. The event had a little something for everyone, including a grass maze, pumpkin picking and corn and apple harvest demonstrations for children, a Vintage Base Ball game, art show opening, Living History activities, arts and crafts, live bluegrass music and much more. If you missed it, mark your calendars for September 26, 2009 for Stuhr's next Harvest Festival.

The day began at 10 a.m. with various activities for children and adults, including vintage tractor displays and a special program on feed sack quilts. A group from the University of Nebraska at Kearney also gave pioneer music demonstrations, and games aplenty were available in the 1890s farmstead.

The event also included a Vintage Base Ball game overseen by Stuhr staff and played by members of the local ROTC. The game drew a few spectators and introduced a group of young people to a historically accurate form of a game they were used to playing.

Throughout the day, harvest demonstrations kept visitors busy, and many children who came through the gate found themselves particularly entertained by the activities provided.

During the Harvest Festival, the Grand Island Art Club and Grand Island Sketch Club held their opening reception for their show "The Nuts and Boltz of Art," which will be on display at the Stuhr Building through November 23. For more information about the exhibit, click here.

The festival closed with a concert by the Nebraska-based bluegrass group Kentucky Rye. Their music provided a perfect ending to a day full of fun, wind and activity. Please mark your calendar for Stuhr's second annual Harvest Festival on September 26.
