GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - Stuhr Museum's biggest celebration of the year, the annual "1890s Independence Day Celebration" took place Friday, July 4th with more than 900 people experiencing this unique festival for themselves.
The day began with the traditional German-language Church Service organized by the Hall County Historical Society. During the event, sermons, songs and readings were in both German and English as a way to honor the German pioneers who made their first American home in Nebraska. At the same time, a quilt show by Mrs. Jo White, featuring over 100 miniature quilts, took place in the Stuhr Museum Auditorium.
The event continued in the afternoon with games, horse rides and the gathering of the "mammoth" parade at 2 p.m. From there, the patriotic program taken from literature of the 1890s took place, with speakers reading the Declaration of Independence and pontificating on the nature of freedom. After the program, cherry pies were mangled during the pie eating contest and children participated in games such as the 3-legged race, egg race and sack race.
Every summer, Stuhr Museum celebrates the 4th of July in grand style, so consider making it part of your family's tradition. For more information, call (308) 385-5316.
