GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - Fishing, literature and a great summer afternoon at Stuhr Museum collide on Sunday, August 16 during the annual "Sunday Afternoon With Tom and Huck" fishing event.

Based on Mark Twain’s classic stories involving Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, history, literature and country fun collide during this unique afternoon of fishing, music and games. Fishing in the Hornady Family Arbor begins at noon and runs throughout the afternoon. Visitors are encouraged to bring their fishing poles, and the museum will provide the bait for the literally thousands of fish in the arbor’s two ponds. A limited number of loaner poles will be available, and prizes will be given to whoever catches the biggest fish and the most fish during the event.

In addition to the fishing, the first 200 children through the gate will get the chance to participate in a boat scavenger hunt followed by a race in the Arbor’s pond. Clues will lead children across the arbor’s grounds to collect pieces of real wooden boats, which they can assemble and race on the pond at 2 p.m. and take home with them when the race is over. The boat races will continue throughout the afternoon.

The event will also feature live bluegrass and country music throughout the afternoon. This slice of Americana also includes games, wood branding, concessions and prizes, including copies of Mark Twain books. Last year, several visitors also came dressed as characters from “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” which the museum encourages.

Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children age 6-12. Those 5 and under are admitted free. Stuhr Museum and Hastings Museum members are admitted free. For more information, contact the museum at (308) 385-5316 or log onto www.stuhrmuseum.org.
