We have over 80 classes offered, each one designed with fun and learning in mind. Classes range from 1 to 5 days, for 2 hours and even all-day adventures! Plus, we added the Youth Engagement Series for 11- to 14-year-olds!
AMAZING NATURE • AGES 7-10 • 1 DayJUNE 2 • 9-11 A.M.Do you love nature? Then come and discover with us! We will dive into the way wind, sunlight, and water work together in nature, what humans can do to help leave nature as ‘natural’ as possible, and how we can use nature to better our lives! A Stitch in Time • AGES 8+ • 5 daysJuly 18-22 • 1-3 P.m.Students will learn the basics of the timeless skill of sewing, including threading a needle and sewing seams and hems. These skills will be applied throughout the week to create a doll-sized dress to take home! Addy & Kirsten • AGES 7+ • 5 daysJUne 6-10 • 1-3 P.m.Come learn about the power of friendship while experiencing life in a 19th-century cabin! Students will learn about the American Girls Addy and Kirsten through immersive activities like baking biscuits in a wood stove, churning ice cream by hand, making crafts, and playing games inspired by the 1850s and 1860s. Advanced Art • AGES 10+ • 3 daysJUly 27-29 • 1-3 P.m.Unlock your inner artist and try your hand at two multi-step, mixed media projects. An eye for detail and design will help you create a Zen Tangle project and an abstract reactive watercolor piece! Adventures on the Prairie • Ages 10+ • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 1-3 P.m.July 18-22 • 1-3 P.m.Come explore the outdoors just as early explorers, hunters, trappers, and mountain men traveling along the Platte River would have done. Students will learn to use a compass, set a simple trap, and much more during this exciting week! Amazing Journeys • ages 8-11 • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 9-11 A.m.Imagine: it’s the late 19th century, and the Age of Exploration is in full swing. New discoveries and emerging technologies allow explorers and adventurers to push the bounds of the known world, traveling further and faster than ever before. Students will travel the globe while learning about the intrepid men and women who made these journeys, how they got where they were going, and what they found once they arrived! AMERICAN GirlS Through the Decades • Ages 8-12 • 5 daysJune 27 – JULY 1 • 1-3 P.m.Join Kit (1930s), Molly/Nanaea (1940s), Maryellen (1950s), Melody (1960s), and Julie (1970s) in their decade in America! We’ll explore a new decade each day, as you and your doll learn, experience, and create something from each decade and see how life has changed or stayed the same over the years. AMERICAN Girl Vacation • ages 7-10 • 5 daysJune 20-24 • 1-3 P.m.A movie premiere, garden parties, picnics, and more! Each day is a new vacation for you and your doll. Each day of vacation will ensure a fun souvenir for yourself and a doll-sized version for your doll, too! Anne of green gables • ages 8+ • 5 daysJune 27 – July 1 • 1-3 P.m.Students will step into the shoes of Anne Shirley, a character in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book, Anne of Green Gables, to get a taste of her adventures as a young girl growing up in the 1870s. Students will make a handful of items from Anne’s story and discuss her experience with friendships, school, and moving to a new place. Arbor Art • ages 6-9 • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 1-3 P.m.Do you love being outside? Do you love being creative? Join us as we get crafty with nature! We’ll learn about the amazing textures and colors Mother Nature has given us and how to use them to make something we’ll treasure forever! Around the World with Nellie Bly • ages 9-11 • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 1-3 P.m.Students will travel the world alongside daring adventurer and star reporter Nellie Bly as she attempts to circle the globe in less than eighty (or, in our case, five) days! Based on Bly’s real-life adventures in 1889, students will learn about what it was like to cross the world on ships and trains in the late 19th century (accompanied by just one suitcase!), what kinds of sights and attractions the world had to offer its intrepid travelers, and just who this audacious lady reporter was.

Art of Pie Baking • ages 10+ • 5 daysJune 27 – July 1 • 9 A.M.-12 p.m.Students will learn to make a variety of pies, from apple to rhubarb, and chocolate to lemon meringue! Pies will feature single, double, and lattice crusts. Adults are welcome, too! Auntie’s Closet • ages 7-9 • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 1-3 P.m.What fun things are hiding in dear auntie’s closet? Maybe there are clothes for dress-up? How about all the things you can make from a shoebox? Students will rummage around to see what they can find to play with and be immersed in history for this unique class! Barnyard Preschool • ages 4-5 • 3 DaysJULY 6-8 • 9-11 a.m.July 25-27 • 9-11 A.m.Come join us for some fun on the farm! We’ll help with chores by pumping water from the well and scrubbing clothes and hanging them to dry. We’ll also get to plant seeds and tend the garden, and even explore the barn and find out who lives there! Beginning Cross Stitch • ages 9+ • 3 daysJune 22-24 • 1-3 P.m.Come learn the basics of this craft that has been rising again in popularity! The basics of cross stitching will be taught using patterns and simple supplies, and students will leave with the skills to continue this hobby for life. Basic sewing knowledge will be helpful as we practice this new technique. Beginning Embroidery • ages 10+ • 5 daysJune 20-24 • 9-11 A.m.Learn to make beautiful designs with a needle and thread! Students will learn the basics of embroidery and take home a variety of completed projects along with the skills to continue this hobby for life! Beginning Needle Felting • ages 10+ • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 1-3 P.m.Did you know that you can sculpt with wool? The possibilities are endless with this hidden treasure of a hobby! In this class, students will learn not only the history but also the ins and outs of needle felting while making some projects! Blooms & Blossoms • ages 10+ • 2 daysJune 20-21 • 9-11 A.m.Express your inner florist as you learn all about the meanings of flowers and their colors. You will create a potted arrangement in a personalized flower pot, a vase arrangement, and a bouquet! Bugs & Nature • ages 7-10 • 3 daysJuly 11-13 • 9-11 A.m.Catch bugs, examine plants, and spot creatures in the water! We will learn about Nebraska vegetation and all the little inhabitants we can find. You’ll get close-up experiences with creatures such as ducks, minnows, butterflies, frogs, and more! Students will warm up with some animal yoga poses, learn traditional Pawnee dances, and learn how Pawnee dances are inspired by and honor the Earth. Dancing into history • ages 6-8 • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 9-11 A.m.Join us as we discover the importance of dance and make crafts for the occasion. Be prepared to form friendships on the dance floor while we learn historic dances as well as proper posture and ballroom etiquette! Digital Photography • ages 9+ • 5 daysJuly 11-15 • 9-11 A.m.Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a great photographer? Learn the basics of photography, using the beautiful Stuhr grounds as your subject. Students need to bring a digital camera with an SD card or cord to connect to a computer. Doll A Day • ages 6-9 • 5 DaysJUNE 20-24 • 9-11 A.m.Since time began, one of the most common toys has been dolls. Students will create many dolls and learn a bit of history for each one. Dolls will be made from corn husks, yarn, paper, and more to take home and love! |

Students will make many crafts to be used in fun games and celebrations and will leave with a great appreciation for the people who lived here before it was known as Nebraska. En Plein Air Pastels • ages 10+ • 5 daysJuly 11-15 • 9-11 A.m.July 18-22 • 9-11 A.m.En plein air means “outdoors”, and that’s where we will be making beautiful artwork! With chalk pastels as a medium, students will use the various outdoor locations of the museum as inspiration for their unique creations. Glass Etching • ages 8+ • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 9-11 A.m.June 13-17 • 9-11 A.m.June 13-17 • 1-3 P.m.Students young and old will discover the amazing creativity involved in the glass etching process! Throughout the week they will view examples of glass etching found on mirrors, window panes, and even vases and jars, and they will learn techniques to create their own works of art, whether they are beginners or returning students. Gold Rush • ages 9-11 • 3 daysJune 21-23 • 1-3 P.m.Come learn about the California Trail as it passed through Nebraska and even the Stuhr Museum grounds! We’ll discover the history of the ’49ers as we stake a claim and pan for gold as if we were in the California gold fields. Grandma, Me & Tea • ages 8+ • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 1-3 P.m.Hosting a tea is an important event for a young Victorian lady! We will spend the week preparing for a tea party where each student can entertain a guest in grand style. Invitations will be made, linens pressed, and the silver must be polished! |
Grow an herb garden • ages 8+ • 3 daysJune 29 – July 1 • 9-11 A.m.Many years ago, people didn’t get to just make a grocery run anytime they ran out of their favorite ingredients. In this Summer Adventure, we’ll go through the entire process: we’ll start with creating our own planters, we’ll plant the seeds, and we’ll learn how to use our leafy friends to make our favorite meals! Hijinks!: A Silent Film • ages 11-14 • 5 daysJuly 11-15 • 1-3 P.m.Hijinks are afoot during this five-day class! Students will learn the basics of pantomime and melodrama in this performance-based class. Students will write and star in their own silent film with a screening for family and friends on the final day. Indigenous Storytelling • ages 11-14 • 3 daysJuly 13-15 • 9-11 A.m.Held in the earth lodge, students will research and learn about the Pawnee people of Nebraska, and their background and connection to the land. Students will share their discoveries with their classmates in an interactive learning circle format. |
Jewelry Making • ages 10+ • 5 DaysJuly 18-22 • 1-3 P.m.Learn how to bead beautiful accessories on a loom and by hand! After you learn to create a loomed bracelet, you will have the option to make at least two other pieces such as clay cut-out earrings, a necklace pendant, or beaded earrings. Jewelry Making Junior • ages 6-9July 18-22 • 9-11 A.m.Do you like making art? Do you like wearing art? In this class, students will use beads, cords, and more to make beautiful wearable art! Josefina • ages 7+ • 5 DaysJune 13-17 • 1-3 P.m.Come meet Josefina from the American Girl series in the year 1824 in New Mexico. We will explore and interact with her rich Mexican culture by cooking food, playing games, and making crafts that were all a part of Josefina’s daily life. Laura Ingalls Wilder 1 • ages 7-8 • 3 daysJune 22 -24 • 9-11 A.m.July 6-8 • 1-3 P.m.Join Laura, Mary, Ma, and Pa for a true prairie adventure! Students will learn to sew a simple project, create crafts, cook on a wood stove, and experience prairie life as Laura would have known. Laura Ingalls Wilder 2 • ages 9+ • 3 daysJuly 13-15 • 1-3 P.m.As Laura grows, so do her experiences on the prairie! Students will explore the lives of Almanzo and Laura while making crafts, cooking, sewing, and other activities based on the books On the Banks of Plum Creek and Little Town on the Prairie. |
Learn to Sew • ages 6-8 • 1 dayJuly 15 • 9-11 A.M.Young beginning sewers will tackle a project on pre-punched paper to learn the basics of sewing, including a running stitch, backstitch, and even how to sew on a button! Let’s Play Games! • ages 7-9 • 5 DaysJune 27 – July 1 • 1-3 P.m.Board games have been around for ages, and they’re just as fun today as they were in the past! In this class, we’ll learn about the evolution of family fun and use our hands and creativity to make a series of games we can play any day, rain or shine! Little Women • ages 9+ • 5 daysJune 20-24 • 9-11 A.m.Meet the March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy – and explore projects that “little women” would have completed during the 1860s including baking, sewing, and art creation! Log Cabin Adventures • AGES 7-9 • 5 daysJune 6-10 • 9-11 A.m.June 18-22 • 9-11 A.m.Step back in time to live like the first settlers on the Nebraska prairie. Students will create crafts, build miniature log cabins, and plant seeds while experiencing daily life in a log cabin, even hauling buckets of water with a yoke! |

Stuhr Museum needs brave students willing to search across the grounds using directions to find pieces of a mysterious puzzle. Compasses, landmarks, and pacing clues will help guide the way each day to complete activities that will bring them one step closer to completing the puzzle! |

Prairie Playwrights • AGES 11-14 • 5 daysJune 27 – July 1 • 9-11 A.m.Railroad town is bustling with stories from the people who live there. In this five-day class, students will take pen to paper learning how to create characters and scenes for the stage. They will interview the townspeople of Railroad town and turn those interviews into an original play, which will be performed for friends and family on the last day of class. Prairie Preschool • AGES 4-5 • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 1-3 P.m.July 18-22 • 9-11 A.M.Experience history through daily activities in Railroad Town! Students will read stories, play old-fashioned games, and create some fun crafts in this fun-filled week on the prairie. Puppet Playtime! • AGES 6-8 • 5 daysJuly 11-15 • 9-11 A.m.Do you love playing pretend and being creative? If so, puppeteering is for you! In this basics class, students will embrace their creativity to invent characters and stories that they will bring to life through puppets! Students will learn some baking basics while making some yummy cookies to take home – unless we eat them all up! Space exploration through the ages • AGES 8-11 • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 1-3 p.m.June 20-24 • 9-11 A.M.3…2…1…BLAST OFF! Come with us into outer space and discover answers to the age-old questions: “What is up there, exactly? How does it all work?” Each day includes a variety of hands-on experiments as we explore space shuttle propulsion, the force of meteors, the ins and outs of our solar system, how to get a baby astronaut to go to sleep (you rocket!) and so much more. It’s sure to be a galactic-ally good time! We will learn from them and give what would be trash a new purpose as fun and practical art. You can’t spell “trash” without a, r, and t! The Circus comes to railroad town • AGES 6-8 • 5 daysJuly 25-29 • 9-11 a.m.Come one, come all to the greatest show of 1892! We will learn about the circus and put on a one-of-a-kind show where we use our unique talents and skills that make us special! Our show will take place during the last 30 minutes of class on Friday. |
THE quest to the west • AGES 10-14 • 1 dayJune 8 • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.July 6 • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.Only the brave are called to complete the mission of traveling westward to discover the unknown! Students will venture together with handcarts and use teamwork to overcome obstacles representing the challenges faced on the trails. Food will be provided with lunch cooked over a fire at a campsite. Through the Looking mask • AGES 11-14 • 3 daysJuly 6 – 8 • 1-3 p.m.Follow Alice down the rabbit hole into a world of fanciful characters. This three-day class will revisit the 19th century Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland. Students will take a closer look at the characters in Alice’s world and create a plaster gauze mask of a character of their choice. Please note that these masks will be molded on each student’s face if you have any concerns about allergies. Time Travel Treasure Hunt • AGES 6-8 • 3 daysJune 22-24 • 1-3 p.m.A journal has been uncovered at Stuhr Museum that calls for present-day adventurers to travel back to 1891 and help a friend in Railroad Town solve a mystery! Join us as we learn about history, how to act like people of the past, and solve clues. Tinsmithing • AGES 10+ • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 9-11 a.m.June 13-17 • 1-3 p.m.July 18-22 • 9-11 a.m.July 18-22 • 1-3 p.m.If you like making ideas come to life with the help of creativity, problem-solving, and a little bit of geometry, then tinsmithing is a craft for you! Students will learn about the origin, tools, and products of the forgotten trade of Tinsmithing and create several authentic items that would have been sold from a tinsmith’s wagon and take home the items they make. Trail Tales • AGES 11-14 • 5 daysJuly 25-29 • 1-3 p.m.Oh, the stories to be told! Students will research and learn about the lives of young pioneers and develop their very own monologues depicting the lives of these early Nebraskans. Students will perform their monologues for family and friends on the last day of class. Trailblazers • AGES 8+ • 5 daysJuly 18-22 • 1-3 p.m.This class encourages students to make connections to the stories of other children who have ever had to start fresh in an unfamiliar home or school. We will read books about people who have “blazed a trail”, from the pioneers of old to families of today, and will then use acting and theatre skills to bring those stories to life! A theatrical performance will take place in the last 30 minutes of class on Friday. |
Vaudeville on the plains • AGES 8-10 • 3 daysJune 1-3 • 1-3 p.m.Vaudeville is coming to the Plains and we need you to be a part of the act! This class will combine all the classic elements of Vaudeville, as students will learn magic tricks, hand puppetry, juggling, the art of joke-telling, and a musical number or two! There will be a performance for friends and family on the last day of class. Water Exploration • AGES 8-11 • 5 daysJuly 18-22 • 1-3 p.m.This class explores the science of water, and the wide variety of activities we can do with water! Every day we will be conducting water experiments and crafts including, water filtration, saltwater density, homemade lava lamps, and boat making to see if they will sink or float! Come cool off and learn about all the fun things water can do! Watercolor painting • AGES 9+ • 5 daysJuly 18-22 • 1-3 p.m.Learn the basics of watercolor technique as you create images taken from Stuhr’s rich environment! We’ll explore the elements and principles of design, compositions, and color relationships. Wheels on the Prairie • AGES 9-11 • 3 daysJuly 26-28 • 1-3 p.m.Students will spend the week learning about things that rolled across the prairie- trains, covered wagons, and farm equipment to name just a few! This class will have a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) focus, and various activities will help us learn about wheels and ensure “we’ll” have fun! |
Workin’ on the Railroad • AGES 10+ • 5 daysJune 13-17 • 9-11 a.m.A new invention has been making its way through Railroad Town and changing life for everyone: the train! Come learn about how this machine of steel and steam changed the west, and experience some of the tasks railroad workers would complete day in and day out to make the invention come to life. All aboard! Write your own story • AGES 7-9 • 5 daysJuly 18-22 • 9-11 a.m.Are you a creative person who loves to read? Come learn how to create a story and write and illustrate your own book by the end of the week! This class offers many different games and activities to get the creative juices flowing, such as mad libs, bag stories, and rewriting common fairy tales. Young Musicians Preschool • AGES 4-5 • 5 daysJune 20-24 • 1-3 p.m.We make and hear thousands of sounds each day, but how can those become music?
