A day of fun and learning on November 9

We are excited to introduce Fall Adventures at Stuhr Museum, a day of fun and learning! Modeled after our popular Summer Adventures program, Fall Adventures include a select offering of classes designed for ages 6 – adult to learn about an array of subjects, from favorites like “Learn to Sew” to brand new classes such as “Make a Charcuterie Board!” Registration is open now, and space is limited, so get your tickets today and join in the fun on November 9th!

Fall Adventures Class Policies

Pricing and Discounts

The price of each class includes all the supplies needed to complete the projects and activities included in the class.

Stuhr Museum members receive a $5 discount on each class registration as a perk of their membership. This perk is only for Stuhr Museum members and does not extend to members of other institutions (i.e. Hastings Museum or museums participating in the North American Reciprocal Museums Association)

 

Cancellations and Refunds

If your student is not able to attend the class they are signed up for, please notify the Education Department. Refunds are given based on when the cancellation is made:

Cancellations made one month or more prior to the class Refund given minus a 10% administrative fee
Cancellations made three weeks prior to the class 50% refund is given
Cancellations made two weeks or less prior to the class No refund is given

If the student you registered cannot attend on the day of the class and you would like to substitute another student, please contact the Education Department in advance to make these arrangements.

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment will be canceled. In this case, you will be notified the week of November 4 and registration fees paid for canceled classes will be refunded to you.

Cell Phones/Technology Use

Technology (ex. cell phone) that is brought to class must be kept put away for the duration of the class. Students who refuse to follow these rules may be asked to sit out portions of the class for their safety and the safety of their classmates. Their adult will be notified of any issues.

Health Information

If your student has any allergies or medical conditions that we need to be aware of, we ask that you fill out our health information form prior to the class so that we can best accommodate your student. A link to the form will be included in the confirmation e-mail when you register for class. MORNING CLASSES

REGISTER  Learn To Sew     

Ages 6-8 • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
Young beginning sewers will tackle a project on pre-punched paper to learn the basics of sewing, including a running stitch, backstitch and even how to sew on a button!

REGISTER  Make a Mini Charcuterie Board        

Ages 7 – 14 • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
Charcuterie boards are all the rage amongst adults right now, but that doesn’t mean kids can’t enjoy them, too! In this class, kids will be guided through age-appropriate food preparation techniques to style their very own kid-friendly charcuterie board on a disposable bamboo plate to take home. All supplies to make this attractive (and tasty!) board are included with registration.

REGISTER  PASTELS

Ages 10 – 14 • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
With chalk pastels as a medium, students will use the various locations of the museum as inspiration for their unique creations.

REGISTER  Suminagashi Paper Marbling   

Ages 12 – 14 • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
Discover the art of Japanese paper marbling! Suminagashi or “floating ink” marbling creates unique patterns whose shapes often echo those found in nature, such as tree-rings, ripples, or geodes. Try your hand at this meditative technique and receive your one-of-a-kind prints by mail following the workshop!

REGISTER  Behind the Scenes: Our Collection

Adults (ages 14+) • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
The first half of the session will include a behind-the-scenes look at the collections department and what we do. This will include a tour of the collections building and storage area. In the second half of the session, you will learn how to care for your family treasures and heirlooms, such as quilts, photographs, and clothing.

REGISTER  Painting Flowers in Watercolor

Adults (ages 14+) • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
Have you ever wanted to learn to paint flowers in watercolor? There is a long history of botanical illustration dating back to 50 CE. Watercolor lends itself to this subject in powerful ways because of the natural flow, texture, and palette of the pigments. Participants in this session will learn the techniques of basic sketch, washes, color order, color mixing, dry brush, wet brush, paper selection, and brush use. Participants can anticipate completing one small watercolor of a flower of their choice in this session.

REGISTER  Settler Saturday

Adults (ages 14+) • November 9 • 10 AM – 12 PM
Spend a day in the 1860s in the cabin, making different foods from the past, and churning your own butter! Also, begin the preparations for a pioneer Christmas. Participants bring a mug or cup to drink from throughout the day. You may dress in 1860’s fashion if you wish.

REGISTER  Glass Etching

Adults (ages 14+) • November 9 • 10 AM – 2 PM (4 hours)
We will explore different aspects of glass etching including pattern development, shading, textures, the use of different grits, as well as the use of chemicals such as Armor Etch. Etching can be done on metal, plastic, or plexiglass. We will also discuss the use of a Dremel in etching.

AFTERNOON CLASSES

REGISTER  Board Games Through History

Ages 7-9 • November 9 • 2 – 4 PM
The oldest board game in human history is nearly 6,000 years old! How does that compare to today’s games and how have gameplay styles changed over time? This class explores these questions while playing a variety of historic and modern tabletop games.

REGISTER  Winter Victorian Tea Party

Ages 8 – 14 • November 9 • 2 – 4 PM
You are invited to a winter-themed tea party at the home of one of your dear friends! Come be a part of a Victorian-era tea party, complete with a winter craft!

REGISTER  Fall Mini Cross-Stitch

Ages 12 -14 • November 9 • 2 – 4 PM
Join us for an afternoon of crafting! In this session, make and take home an autumnal mini cross-stitch project. Multiple patterns will be available to choose from and all supplies will be provided. We will spend the first 15-20 minutes of the session reviewing the basics of cross-stitching, so beginners are welcome!

Throughout our history, ornithologists (those who study birds), have relied on watercolor artists to illustrate their nature guides, biology books, and birding books. The medium lends itself well to these endeavors and has produced some of the most iconic and artistic images of birds around the world. The historical Audubon Society books are a classic example of this work. In this Audubon style, participants in this session will learn the techniques of basic sketch, washes, color ordering and mixing, dry brush, wet brush, and proper brush technique to create a small watercolor of their favorite bird in the allotted time of the session.

Join us for a hands-on experience where you’ll learn tips and tricks for cutting and arranging charcuterie to make your very own seasonal charcuterie board! Beginners and experienced charcuterie board makers will enjoy the inspiring atmosphere of the beautiful Stuhr Building as the setting for this class as they practice cutting, folding, and placing each element on the board to create a beautiful and tasty board, perfect for any gathering or occasion.
