This Winter
Stuhr Museum is a popular destination in the summertime, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do in the winter! There is a lot to see and do everyday, and we even have some new things to offer this year!
1. Explore the Stuhr Building
The Leo B. Stuhr Building is open every day, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. for visitors to explore! When you step inside, you’ll be instantly greeted with holiday cheer, as the Fantasy of Trees exhibit spans 2 floors and the tree themes are all unique! Over 70 businesses, organizations and families come together each year to decorate trees for this extraordinary display! The Stuhr Building also has a number of historic artifacts on display to admire and learn about year-round. To learn more about upcoming exhibits, click here.
2. Skate at the Glaciarium
Stuhr Museum’s own ice skating rink is opening this winter, and you won’t want to miss out on this experience! The Glaciarium will feature a synthetic ice surface and gets its’ name from the very first artificial ice skating rink opened in London way back in the year 1841 under the same name. Ice skating was a popular winter pastime in the era we portray at Stuhr Museum, and we’re so excited to be able to offer this fun winter activity to our community and visitors! We’re polishing up the details and sharpening skates and we’ll announce the official opening date soon!
3. Find the perfect gift at the Prairie Treasures Gift Shop
Located in the Stuhr Building, the Prairie Treasures Gift Shop features unique souvenirs and gift items that you can’t find just anywhere in town! Books for kids and adults, stuffed animals, jewelry, keychains, toys, and more will give you plenty to choose from to find a gift for that hard-to-please person in your life (or yourself… we won’t tell!)
4. Visit the Fonner Rotunda
The Fonner Rotunda features Native American and cowboy exhibits, including the inspiring “Arrow Maker” stature in the center of the building. This unique building is round and if you look closely at the floor, you might notice a familiar wagon wheel design. The “spokes” each display artifacts with a common theme. For those that haven’t visited in a while, you’ll see a brand-new exhibit highlighting the history of the Bartenbach Opera House (and you can pick up a book about it in the Praire Treasures Gift Shop, too!)
5. Learn something new in the STEAM Learning Center
The STEAM Learning Center, formerly known as the Farm Machinery Building, recently got a facelift! While still home to an incredible collection of antique automobiles, tractors, and other implements, additional STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & math) activities have been added. These activities are primarily aimed at elementary-aged kiddos, but really the whole family can get involved with building challenges and more! The STEAM Learning Center is open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, year-round.
6. Enjoy a tasty treat in the Stuhr Bistro
Located in the Stuhr Building, the Stuhr Bistro is open every day, providing visitors with tasty treats, savory sandwiches, and wraps, steaming soups, and more! The Bistro is a new addition to Stuhr Museum this past fall and we’re excited to be able to now offer year-round food service for our visitors. Stop by and give it a try!
