Platte Valley Tin Shop
Built between 1870 and 1875 as a barn in Grand Island, this building has been repurposed as the Tin Shop in Railroad Town. Inside, you’ll find original equipment from C. W. Barber’s tin workshop in North Loup, Nebraska—offering an authentic look at this skilled trade.
What Does a Tinsmith Do?
Tinsmiths created and repaired items using tinplate—thin sheets of iron or steel coated with tin to prevent rust. This material was lightweight, flexible, and easy to shape, making it ideal for a wide range of uses.
Using hand tools, tinsmiths cut, bent, and hammered tinplate into everyday household goods such as cups, pie tins, bowls, cookie cutters, coffee and teapots, wash tubs, and basins. They also produced larger functional items like roofing materials and gutters.
